An interesting article in the NYTimes about Single Sex Public Education
I first heard about this movement in 7th grade when I had a teacher from Australia. He was on an exchange program with my 7th grade teacher for half of the school year. This was back in the late 80s, but he said that girls did better in single sex classrooms, but that boys seemed to show no difference. I think it makes some intuitive sense that kids would learn better if they were separated. I like the idea of single sex classrooms. Particularly if the students can still mingle during elective classes.
I think the article is well worth a read. It does a good job of representing the tension between wanting to be successful at educating women and the rejection of "essentalism".
